1915. While bombs rain down outside, Alice Hargreaves takes refuge in her dusty cellar, rediscovering her childhood amongst broken tennis racquets, old lamp shades and moth-eaten christening gowns. Meanwhile her son Alan, a WW1 soldier, makes the same imaginary journey down the rabbit hole to escape the madness of war, animating the objects around her to return them both to a wonderland of talking rabbits, mad hatters and savage queens.

Based on Lewis Carroll’s literary classic and the real life Alice who inspired it, this poignant new play is brought imaginatively to life with Metta’s trademark mix of theatre, puppetry and object manipulation. Metta bring this production to Little Angel Theatre following their sell-out performances during SUSPENSE London Puppetry Festival at the V&A.

‘Metta Theatre are creating a little bit of magic…uniquely charming…Mandy Travis is a delight…beautiful puppetry…stunning use of object manipulation…transforming the ordinary to the remarkable…poignant and bewitchingly magical.’ 4**** Mary Halton in Exeunt

‘Extraordinary…both magical and a little disturbing…brilliantly designed… this brief hour will stay with me for a long time, the sadness and strangeness echoing.’ 4**** Libby Purves in Theatre Cat

‘magical and moving…atmospheric and poignant’ Natasha Tripney in The Stage
