To launch our new blog of the Little Angel Theatre, we thought that it would be a nice idea to reflect back upon 2009.

We had quite a hectic year with a total of 39 different shows, a new festival and so many puppets brought to life that it would turn your head simply upside down!

One of the joys of the shows that get produced and performed either at the Little Angel Theatre or elsewhere on tour is the images that we capture from performances. Below are some of our favourite images that when put together represent 2009 for us.

(All photos are © Little Angel, unless otherwise stated.)

The Giraffe and the Pelly and Me, our Christmas show which very nearly didn’t happen due to funding but horrah! thanks to fundraising and donations the show went on with critical success. * * * * Four Stars, The Sunday Times and Financial Times.

The famous Roald Dahl story brought to life by puppets:

The Tin Forest and Little Hippo and his Magic Pen. Both part of our visitors Children season.

Our Visitors season continues through March, but added are our Adult shows, where things get a little bit darker such as Horray For Hollywood by Puppet (Re)Evolution:

… and a slightly lighter The Key in the Sea by Company Flotsam & Jet:

Spring was in the air and we played host to Videks Shirt and Urashima Taro. Two very different but compelling shows.

May and June

Handa’s Hen came to the theatre in May and June of 2009, bringing with it some 55 puppets! From frogs, mice and of course a hen. Based on the book by Eileen Browne.

July and August

These are our quietest moments within the theatre, as no shows are produced across this ‘dark period’. So instead, we went to Edinburgh! Puppet Grinder Cabaret in association with the Little Angel Theatre toured up to the Edinburgh Festival.

Puppet Grinder Cabaret is strictly for adults, and explores the darker side to puppetry:

September and October

We all know of the story of Cinderella, well the Little Angel brought you Cindermouse! The mice version in puppetry form.

In 2008 we brought to you Jelly Bean Jack a different take upon Jack and the Beanstork… this time Jack went off to the Roundhouse and played over Christmas.

This photo below features a proto type of the cow for the performance.

… and here is the final outcome, complete with Jack having a ride.

Christmas time at the Little Angel! Along with the festive joys came a new puppetry show, a little darker than our usual Christmas show, that of Petrushka, the Russian tale. Based on the music of Stravinsky and to the words of John Agard, Petrushka became the puppet trying to live a life without strings.

… playing alongside Petrushka was a revival of our 2006 childrens show, Splish Splash!

Well, there you have it. 2009 in Photos. We hope that you have liked exploring some of the visual side of puppetry that we at the Little Angel bring you. Stay watching for future news and articles from the staff at the Little Angel.
