A Welcome Project Digital Short commission by Mikayla Teodoro in Association with Little Angel Theatre
14th December 2023
‘Home is Where the Food is’ explores the directors lived experience of moving to the UK and the things she left behind – friends, family, and food. Through learning how to cook Filipino meals she has learnt that home is never really far away.
Reese is moving away from the Philippines. Because of this, she has to say goodbye to her beloved aunt, Manang. Upon moving to the UK, she remembers her memories with Manang cooking her most favourite food – their trips to the market, preparing the dishes, and sharing meals together. Despite the neighbourhood children welcoming her into their community, Reese’s longing for home hinders her from making new friends.
One day, she finds a book – it’s about Filipino food! Could this help Reese with her homesickness? “Home Is Where The Food Is” explores the magic of sharing meals and what it means to welcome and be welcomed.
