Intermediate Puppetry Course

Spring term:
Thursday evenings, 7 – 9.30pm

About the Course
Our Intermediate Puppetry Course invites participants to explore thoroughly some of the most popular forms of contemporary puppetry. Each session of the ten-week term will build upon the fundamental principles of puppetry, culminating in a final sharing of work. These sessions will leave participants with a knowledge of advanced techniques, confidence in handling animated objects and specialist skills for devising live performance with puppets. Participants will also get the opportunity to put their design skills into practice through specific making sessions.

This course is ideally suited to those who want to continue to build their skills after completing our Puppetry Foundation Course. However, if you are a practiced performer who wants to work on their skill this course will also be suitable. This term includes a show visit to The Dong with a Luminous Nose on Saturday 5 October at 4.30pm, followed by a Q&A.

About the tutor:
Oliver Hymans is an award-winning puppetry artist and director. He has worked internationally across four continents, directing puppetry in theatre, opera, film and music video and his puppet creations have appeared at London’s Tate Modern, Little Angel Theatre, Arcola Theatre, The National Gallery, Camden Roundhouse and The Institute of Contemporary Arts. Most recently he was a puppeteer in the new Hot Chip music video ‘Spell’, had Sir Ian McKellen voice his puppet in the short film How a Kite Flies and directed Little Angel Theatre’s acclaimed production Emily Rising (“dazzling technical flourishes” – The Guardian) which will be going on a national tour in autumn 2019.
