About the Course
Designed for absolute beginners, it is open to all those who have always wanted to have a go at puppetry but never had the opportunity to do so. Explore a variety of different puppet forms and learn the basics of puppet manipulation and making over 8 weeks. This term the course will be delivered online via zoom, and will focus on solo-puppetry skills, being creative with objects available in the home, learning the principles of puppetry, making your own puppet and performing. You will have opportunities to interact and share ideas with your fellow participants (max. 16 people) and to ask Oliver questions.
Once you have signed up to the course you will be provided with a materials list, but the focus will largely be on simple materials you can source easily or find around the home.
About the Tutor
Oliver Hymans is an award-winning puppetry artist and director. He has worked internationally across four continents, directing puppetry in theatre, opera, film and music video and his puppet creations have appeared at London’s Tate Modern, Little Angel Theatre, Arcola Theatre, The National Gallery, Camden Roundhouse and The Institute of Contemporary Arts. Most recently he was a puppeteer in the new Hot Chip music video ‘Spell’, had Sir Ian McKellen voice his puppet in the short film How a Kite Flies and directed Little Angel Theatre’s acclaimed production Emily Rising (“dazzling technical flourishes” – The Guardian) which will be going on a national tour in autumn 2019.
“The course was inspiring and engaging. I feel I have learnt a huge amount about the art of puppetry and have improved my own puppetry skills. Thanks to Oliver for being such a patient teacher”.
