An open call out for Digital Shorts

UPDATE 19 August 2021: We are overwhelmed by the number of applications we have received for our Digital Short commission – over 80! Please bear with us – we want to give each one due consideration and so it might take a little longer than anticipated to let people know the outcome.

Little Angel Theatre is excited to offer 6 commissioning opportunities for puppetry artists / companies to create a digital short for the theatre’s YouTube Channel.

The Digital Short must be:

-Between 5-10 mins in length

-Filmed to a high quality (either single or multi-camera – and on a smart phone is fine.)

-Aimed at children (any age but between 0 and 11)

-Use puppetry (in any form).

Each artist / company will receive £1,750 per commission.

We can offer the following support for your project: BlackBox rehearsal/filming space; equipment use, including camera/tripod/lighting; workshop space; making assistance; basic materials; puppeteers and creative guidance.  Please state in your application if you require any of these.

To apply for the commission, please send in a one-page (or less) overview of your Digital Short idea (please note – the Digital Short can already be in existence, or it can be an entirely new project).
Please include the following information in the overview:

-Name of artist or company (plus lead contact if a company)

-Brief paragraph explaining your digital idea/approach (this can be photos or images if preferable)

-A brief BIOG for the artist / company

– Support required from Little Angel

Please note the ethos behind Watch, Make and Share when applying:

Watch, Make and Share is not an attempt to put live shows online.  Instead, we aim to make work specifically for the screen for children and their families to watch at home, along with videos and downloadable guides to encourage them to make at home, using things they could find in their homes or could source easily.  They are then encouraged to share these with us on our online gallery, so that we can create a sense of celebration and community around the programme. It is important that the content isn’t just passive, but encourages active participation too.  All of the content is offered for free on our YouTube Channel, as we want to make it accessible to as many people as possible.

Our Creative Learning Team will create downloadable making guides to further enhance all digital shorts.

The 6 selected commissions will be released on our YouTube Channel over the course of 6 months, and will remain on the channel for 18 months from the day of release, and will be exclusive to LAT (with the exception of the artist/company’s own platforms) for this duration.

Please submit proposals by email to with Commission Application in the email heading.

Deadline for applications 10am, Monday 16th August.
