About the Course

The sock puppet is exceptional in its unpretentious simplicity. As well as being so readily available, it makes for a puppet which is extraordinarily malleable and expressive within a wide range of performance contexts. When on the hand of a proficient puppeteer, the humble sock metamorphoses into a powerful and convincing protagonist. The sock puppet is also a perfectly suited medium to further explore, refine and develop techniques universal to puppetry performance.

In this masterclass, Oliver will draw upon lessons learnt and experience gained through performing with socks for two and a half decades, from early beginnings as an anarchic warm-up act for bands, through to cabaret, festivals, music videos, film and within touring theatre productions.

This course will break down as approximately ¾ performance technique and ¼ making.

This workshop will be delivered via Zoom. Download our Zoom Policy here.

About the Tutor

Oliver Smart has been exploring the art of puppetry since the 1990s. His performances have taken him across the world, playing to audiences on large and small stages. He has worked as a puppeteer on screen within films, TV and music videos. Oliver is passionate that puppetry is a transformative medium which can take place anywhere and be performed to anyone by anyone.

He shares his ideas and experience as a puppeteer, puppet designer and maker by teaching within the programmes of many performing arts colleges in London.

Oliver’s kinetic artworks have been presented in galleries and design fairs internationally.

Oliver is the director of Folded Feather and continues to play with socks whenever the opportunity arises.

As part of Folded Feather, Matthew recently co-produced the digital short Don’t Worry Little Crab for Little Angel Theatre’s YouTube channel, which went on to feature in the Manchester Literature Festival.
