INSET: Making Emotion Puppets

A CPD session for teachers, EYFS practitioners and anyone working with children

About the Course
Working with experienced puppeteer and puppet maker Joni-Rae Carrack, this workshop will focus on creating puppet versions of emotions that can be used within the classroom to further develop children’s emotional literacy. The session will include puppet making and puppeteering skills and ideas around how to use the puppets you have made to support PSHE lessons or when working with focused children.

The workshop will explore how children can use their emotion puppets to help explore feelings and develop a core vocabulary to express their feelings. Through exploring issues around happiness, sadness, expressing anger and dealing with fear and loss with their puppets children can begin to realise that feelings are normal and a part of us.

This workshop will support the teaching of PSHE and the concepts covered can help children to recognise their own and others’ feelings and emotions and how their actions affect others including elements of:

• Beginning to recognise, name and manage their own feelings and emotions.
• Beginning to understand that feelings are a natural, important and healthy part of a human being.
• Beginning to recognise and manage the effects of strong feelings such as anger, sadness or loss.
• Examining and exploring their own and others’ feelings and emotions;- knowing how to recognise, express and manage feelings in a positive and safe way.
